6. CALLIGRAPHY

This class will learn and practice the Uncial style of calligraphy. Uncial is characterized by somewhat rounded letters found in the 4th to 8th century manuscripts. Emphasis will be on making a variety of greeting cards and addressing envelopes. Other projects will be included as desired by class members. A supply list will be given at the first class. Limit 20. 6 Classes.

7. A WILDFLOWER CRAYON QUILT

Participants will trace a provided wildflower design onto 100 percent cotton fabric. These designs will be colored with Crayola crayons and then will be heat set. Next the squares will be pieced in a chain pattern and combined with wildflower squares for a quilt.

8. HOW TO LISTEN TO CLASSICAL MUSIC

This course focuses on aspects of listening and understanding that enrich and deepen our enjoyment of classical music. We will listen to represen- tative masterworks and discuss their style, form and meaning. The selection of works changes from semester to semester. Questions to be raised include the role of interpretation and the importance of rehearing music. No formal musical background is required.

9. INTERMEDIATE ITALIAN

This course, a step above Beginning Italian, is aimed at broadening students’ understanding of spoken Italian and the essentials of Italian grammar. The course will involve listening, reading and interacting in the Italian language. Each session will include a segment on Italian opera. Even if new to the language, students familiar with any Romance language should be comfortable in the class. There will be a small charge for additional materials. Limit 20.

10. AN INTRODUTION TO BUDDHISM Class is full and closed!

Buddhism takes a straightforward look at our human condition. The Buddha’s teachings were based on his own observations. This class will offer an introduction to the Buddhist perspective, an exploration of key Buddhist concepts, their practical application to daily life, basic meditation, and discussions based upon our own experiences. Limit 20.

11. “READING” A WORK OF ART

This class will guide you through the steps of reading one of humanity’s first forms of non- verbal communication. Visual art has been created by human beings since before civilization began in many different styles, yet all visual art has commonalities that can be read as easily as reading a book. We will discuss the basics of reading Fine Art, followed by a trip to an art museum in Austin.
