We will travel through millennia of African history from the origins of humankind up to the present, visiting nine countries that represent the rich cultural, linguistic, and technological developments that accompanied the rise and fall of empires and great cities, the impacts of the slave and other trade, and the effects of European colonialism. Specific countries to be visited include Ethiopia, Tanzania, Union of South Africa and Zimbabwe, Benin, Togo, Ghana, Mali and Tunisia. There will be a materials fee of $2.00. Limit 24.

49. UNDERSTANDING ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE
Everyone in our society will probably be affected at some level by the growing wave of this devastating disease. This class examines all sides of the problem—biological, psychological, sociological and personal. Through discussions of the latest research and presentations from local experts we address warning signs, diagnosis, stages, treatment, the challenges of caregiving, and community resources. The instructor is a retired psychologist who brings her own personal experience as a caregiver to share with participants. 51. FILM NOIR AND WHY WE LOVE IT
These are American films, often made by European émigré directors. Among attributes we will consider are a certain black-and-white look, a complex storyline, artful use of music, and a disregard for happy endings. After an historic overview, we will watch and talk about films made during the classic Noir period (early Forties to late Fifties.) There will be no break during class, as films are shown without interruption. Limit 40. No class March 15, ends April 12.

Everyone will learn to sew an incredible tote bag and a small purse. This will be one of the most exciting projects that you will ever sew. The bag and purse will be unique because each will be designed by you, drawing the inside and outside without a pattern. Some sewing outside of class will be necessary to complete the project.
