21. EGYPT’S IDENTITY—PAST AND PRESENT

We will review the geography and history of Egypt to explain its culture medley and its importance in the past and future of the Middle East. Topics include religion, economy and government. We will view the Egyptian film The Yacoubian Building as we discuss reasons behind the December 2010 Revolution. We will sample the culture by reading the first five chapters of Nobel Prize winner Naguib Mahfouz’s novel Palace Walk, and watching the documentary Umm Kulthum, a Voice Like Egypt about the celebrated diva of the Arab World. Limit 25.

24. MEN WITH GUNS: LATIN AMERICA AND THE COLD WAR IN CINEMA

During the Cold War, 125,000 Americans died fighting overseas. However, more than three times that many Latin Americans were killed. Their deaths were the results of internecine violence, civil wars fought on home turf, in struggles consistently predicated in Cold War terms. We will view four movies – Men with Guns, Missing, Romero, and The Official Story – that illustrate the impact of the Cold War on our sister American republics and on our own. Small donation for copies requested. Note start date; course ends April 10.

25. BEGINNING BIRDING

Texas has a marvelous diversity of bird life and Central Texas in particular is blessed with unusual and unique birds. This class will look at the area’s bird groups and help the novice identify the birds’ families. Many handouts on local birdlife will be provided. Mark Klym is an Information Specialist with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, a bird researcher and active local birder.

26. KNITTING AND CROCHETING
