5. RECREATIONAL MATHEMATICS FOR BEGINNERS
Meet the entertaining side of mathematics. There is a great deal of very cool, fairly simple mathematics that is not taught in school and that most people never learn. We will use colors, models, and hands-on activities (as well as pencil and paper) to explore the large, strange world of numbers and shapes. Topics covered will include positive and negative curvature, Euler characteristic, the five Platonic solids, origami, modular arithmetic, Pascal’s triangle, the Fibonacci numbers, and some calculating tricks. No background in mathematics is needed.
