19. Slavery—Ancient, Historical and Today?

  • Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, Rm. 205 3525 Bee Cave Road Austin, Texas, 78746 (map)

This course starts with a definition of slavery, its extent, and its earliest practices, from ancient slavery to the rise of large-distance slave trades conducted by Islamic and Christian societies. We examine the Transatlantic trade, including its African participants, conditions of the Middle Passage, slavery in the Caribbean and Brazil, and the development of slavery in North America. We give particular attention to the rise of abolitionism in Britain and America and the ideology of slavery in the American South. The Civil War and emancipation will be put into economic, military, and social context, including the significance of Black regiments in the Union Army. Finally, we consider slavery in contemporary times in the Islamic State and other instances of social structures that could be described as practicing slavery today. Limit 30.
