3. Getting to Know Chinese Culture Through Tang Poetry

  • The Church at Highland Park, Burchette Room 5206 Balcones Drive Austin, TX, 78731 (map)

To the Chinese people, love of their poetry is second only to love for their cuisine, and the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD) is the acknowledged Golden Age of Chinese Poetry. This course offers a glimpse of the historic chaos and glorious splendor of the age through the poetry of some of its greatest poets, whose influence remains relevant and vivid in modern culture. Presentations will follow the plan laid out in Dr. Susan Wan Dolling’s series of stories and poems entitled My China in Tang Poetry in three volumes: Superstars, Floating on Clouds, and Friends and Lovers. These make the poetry accessible to the general reader while introducing the culture. You don’t have to be a poetry buff, nor have previous knowledge of Chinese history, just the will to make the leap of imagination and the curiosity to learn about this unfamiliar culture, place and time. Class members are encouraged to purchase the series, available on Amazon in Kindle format ($6.99 each) or Paperback ($16.99) and follow along as the instructor presents the poets and poems in sequence. Purchasing books, however, is not necessary to enjoy the class, and you may decide to wait until you hear their stories before you claim these books for yourselves. Dr. Dolling holds a PhD in Comparative Literature from Princeton University and has had many years of teaching experience with college students, Montessori children and older adult informal audiences.
