  • Westover Hills Church of Christ, Room 201 8332 Mesa Drive Austin, TX, 78759 (map)

This course offers a taste of a variety of topics presented by different LLI instructors over six weeks.

  • Sept. 17 The Symbolism of Gravestone Art—Texas and Beyond We examine common symbols found in area cemeteries, both old and modern, with explanation of what they are meant to represent, since symbols without meaning become mystery. (Bronwyn Bowen)

  • Sept. 24 Pablo Neruda Explains a Few Things About the Spanish Civil War Our close reading of a single poem—"I Explain a Few Things" (1937)—within its historical context of the Spanish Civil War explores the breadth, depth, and reach of the life and art of Neruda, Latin America's best known and most widely translated poet. (Catharine Wall)

  • Oct. 1 Art Crime While crime can infiltrate the world of fine art in many ways, this class looks at major thefts and forgeries and explores why this subject continues to fascinate and repel us. (Terry Martin)

  • Oct. 8 Emotion and Meaning in the Arts What if the “meaning” of most art, including literature, were emotional rather than intellectual? This class will discuss this question through a few illustrative poems and stories students will receive before class by email as PDF attachments. (Joseph Longino)

  • Oct. 15 Entomology: An Introduction to Insects Four out of five animal species on our planet are insects. Here’s a great opportunity to learn more about these little creatures that rule the world. (Valerie Bugh)

  • Oct. 22 Moments Worth Retelling—Memoir Tips for Beginning Writers This class is designed to give people with little writing background the inspiration and tools to record the highlights of their lives in short, informal memoirs. No in-class writing. (Bronwyn Bowen)
