  • Lamar Senior Activity Center 2874 Shoal Crest Avenue Austin, TX, 78705 (map)

If you enjoyed last semester’s introductory course on screenwriting (see course 57 in this catalog), or have some experience writing for screen, unlock the secrets of storytelling for the silver screen with this comprehensive beginner’s guide to crafting a feature-length screenplay.
Our objectives:

  1. Understanding Screenplay Structure—the three-act structure; pacing and key plot points; exploring popular templates

  2. Developing Compelling Characters—protagonists and antagonists with goals, flaws, arcs; using character bios and relationship maps

  3. Building Your Story World—vivid settings; balancing action, description, and dialogue to keep readers engaged

  4. Writing Scenes That Pop—anatomy of a scene; formatting like a pro; common pitfalls

  5. Dialogue That Drives the Story—natural, purposeful conversations revealing character and advancing the plot; trimming the fat

  6. Formatting Essentials—industry-standard guidelines; software tools

  7. Rewriting and Polishing—revise and seek feedback

  8. Next Steps—protecting your work; pursuing pathways to production.

This structured roadmap will help you transform your idea into a polished, industry-ready script. Recommended (but not required) readings include Screenplay by Syd Field and Story by Robert McKee. Excellent script examples include the classics Chinatown and Pulp Fiction, and modern hits Get Out and Parasite. Limit 18.
